One of my latest investments with Canrock Ventures is in American Health Journal. AHJ has a TV show that has been airing on PBS since 2002. The have also won over 90 national awards. The content is very high quality and perfect for monetizing on the web, so we bought the exclusive rights to publish the content online.

The site will eventually have over 10,000 medical videos, which can be seen at American Health Journal. It is well known that video is where the Internet is going, plus medical video has the most expensive advertising rates.

We are editing the videos down to 1-2 minute segments, answering a very specific medical question. For example:

What Is Osteoporosis
Why Use Cosmetic Fillers
Why Should You Immunize Your Child

Our goal is to not just run our own website, but also create distribution partnerships. This is evergreen content, so it could monetize pretty well for 7-10 years. The advantage we have with AHJ is the ability to create new content each month. So as medical information gets old, we can launch brand new videos.

Check out the content and let me know what you think.

It is amazing how any advancement on the Internet usually has about a five year life span. Web 2.0, which is still fairly new to some people… is now being pushed aside by the talk of Web 3.0. It is still in its infancy stage, but as we know… six months is a long time for technology.

So what could Web 3.0 do for us? Lets say you want to go out on a date and want to do the traditional dinner and a movie. So you decide for an action flick and maybe some Italian food. So you go to your computer (Mac for me) and decide to search for the movie times and a great Italian restaurant (because you want to impress your date).

What is your next step? Well, you need to find a movie, the theatre, the time and maybe watch some trailers and read reviews… plus you may want to read some reviews on restaurants as well. You may visit Fandango, Movie.com, Zagat.com, Yellowpage.com… probably four to six websites.

Experts believe Web 3.0 will make these tasks faster and easier. Instead of searching on multiple sites, you might be able to ask a question like “I want to see an action movie and eat at an Italian restaurant”. The Web 3.0 browser will search the Internet for all possible answers and provide the search results.

Many experts also believe the Web 3.0 browser could act like that personal assistant we would all love to have. The “intelligent” browser could learn your likes and dislikes… kind of reminds me of the movie “I, Robot”. The more data you gather, the more it learns about you. You could even one day ask “what movie should I watch?”, and you will see a list that fits you. For me, it would probably spit out an action movie. It could even tell you when your favorite actors new movie is coming out.

The Internet has changed drastically over the past 10 years and it will only change faster now. I know I will look back in 20 years and say, wow… look at where we are now.

As a business owner, what do you do when you have two completely opposite employees? One is extremely talented, but rarely gets work done and cannot be depended on and then the other is not the “sharpest tool in the shed”, but puts 110% into everything and eventually, after a while, gets things done.

I dealt with two great guys for years and it was always a struggle. Again, one of them was one of the smartest people I have ever met. It was amazing how he knew everything about anything. It didn’t matter what the question was, he knew the answer. Wanted to know how a light bulb was made, needed a quick fix for any server or network problem… it didn’t matter what it was. The problem was after five minutes, it is like he completely forgot what he was working on and was working on something else. You literally had to stand over him to make sure he finished something. It was very frustrating, but I saw the potential. He was never money motivated, so that did not help at all. He was the guy that would provide all of his services for free, because to him it was fun. I could understand that, but what do you do as a business owner.

We kept him, just about from beginning to end… there was some stints where he left and came back. He just always got bored with just about everything he tried. To give an example, “for fun” he built a small unit that would sit in a housing development and as the program ran it would crack all the garage doors and he would watch them all go up and down. Yup, that was an exciting Friday night.

It is good know that he finally figured out that he needed to straighten himself… he has found a great job and has changed his life around. To me, he should have been sitting on top of Microsoft or any of these companies making a whole bunch of money, but again, that was not his motivation. I just hope that I had some influence on him to get him to where he is now.

The other guy, he had some trouble in his 20′s. Spent time in jail, doing some bad things. He was the type that didn’t fit into the corporate world, long hair, motorcycle, tattoos, but that didn’t matter to us. It was hard though, for what takes someone five minutes, took him 20.

I always believe you have to put people in the position to succeed and that is what I did. I put him in a position that he could shine on his own. He was never late, always showed up to work, didn’t complain… much… and you could sleep at night knowing he was around. It was odd to say that, but it was true.

There is something to be said about someone who doesn’t want to go back to an “easier” life and took the struggle head on. He always had problems finding a job because of his past. He didn’t get much respect because of how “slow” he was, but at least in the end he got the job done.

He knew the company was getting sold so he tried to find a job, he couldn’t find one right away so he ended up going with the company. It took him years to find a new job and I was so impressed on how he never gave up. I got to give it to him, it would have been so much easier to quit, but he took the hard road and now has a great job. He has been at the new job for a couple of years now and absolutely loves it.

So what am I trying to say? No matter who the person is, there is always a way to make them shine. It just comes down to the ability to see potential in people.

There are many ways to utilize the Internet for marketing. Online marketing could be broken down into two main categories, white hat and black hat. White hat tends to produce results that last a long time and black hat marketers anticipate their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing.

I have tried black hat marketing and have to say it does work. Problem is, you can “get in trouble” by the big boys and have your website downgraded and just banned from search engines. Black hat is always going to be useful to some that are looking to drive quick traffic to a website. Black hat techniques, once they get overused, can change how search engines go about their business.

Squidoo.com was downgraded by Google , which was designed to give people a place to share knowledge online… with the understanding that marketers would likely use it to project their expertise and generate new business. Squidoo ended up turning into a black hat marketers play pen and because of this Squidoo had to clean up their site. Black hat marketers, you can say, killed the reputation of Squidoo and will drive some away from the website because they do not want search engines to penalize them by using the website. In the end, this also hurts Squidoo as a business.

The bottom line is, black hat marketing is not worth the time and effort if you are a legitimate business and care about your websites place on search engines. There are many ways to utilize white hat techniques for long-term growth and placement on search engines. Online advertising takes time to do it right and you have to be patient. The biggest problem is, am I doing it right? It is tough to put time and effort into something only to find out later it is not working. The only thing I can say about that is to find someone that knows what they are doing to guide you or do the work for you.

Quick story… I worked with the owner of a blog that doubled their visitors from 20,000 to 40,000 in 30 days just by using one piece of advice. Online advertising does not always have to take forever, you can have success rather quickly if done correctly.

Below are 10 basic SEO strategies that you can implement. You can also check out Web CEO, which is a free SEO tool that can really take out a lot of the guess work.

1. Identify the main competitive keywords (4 or 5 for organic, 200 to 400 for PPC). These can be found via Wordtracker, which offers one day worth of detailed keyword information for $8. You can look at keywords from log files.

2. Create a website title that grabs attention. Most successful titles use important keywords and should be descriptive and provocative.

3. Add in a description of the website before the company name in the Page Title Syntax.

4. Include H1, H2 heading tags. Search engines often look for clues in headings and subheads, plus you can use keywords as well in those tags. You can also put keywords in the “alt” tags in images as well.

5. Remove frames from websites because search engines cannot see them. Also, flash and javascript can hurt you as well. You can use SSIs for menus instead.

6. Start to employ the use of links. Google has started to weigh the use of links heavily when determining rank. Link your site from industry hubs, and others that have a high page rank. Request reciprocal links from other websites.

7. Get listed in directories. dmoz.com and others are free while Yahoo charges $299/year but it could be worth it to get faster results.

8. Start to build links submitting article and press releases, blogging, build an online forum, submit videos… basically anything that can build back links.

9. Setup an A/B testing service so that changes to your website can be tested to see if the conversion rate goes up or down depending on the specific changes. Several companies offer this for $20/month.

10. Put more time into building back links than anything else. SocialMarker.com will make your life a lot easier.

The need for a company to build their brand on the Internet is imperative. Problem is, most companies do not know where to begin. With the popularity of video, blogs and social networking… Internet marketing has changed over the years. Below are 4 types of marketing techniques that anyone looking to build their brand should start with. This is just a summary, as I will go into more detail on each marketing technique in other blogs. If you need help with any of these techniques, please contact me.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

SEO is critical since most types of marketing techniques have something to do with SEO. It all starts with optimizing the website to make sure it is search engine friendly. Trying to figure out how to optimize a website could be a daunting task, but a piece of software that made my life a lot easier is Web CEO. It is free software that will point you in the right direction and take out a lot of the guess work. I will be creating videos on how to use this software.

Video Marketing:

Video Marketing is the number 1 traffic on the Internet, with YouTube controlling about 80% of the market. That does not mean you should only use YouTube.

There are multiple ways to utilize video. If you are trying to sell products, using video to explain the product will increase your conversion rate. For example, if you are selling clothes… having someone model the clothes in a video, not just a picture, will do wonders for your sales.

Another way to use video is by taking the same video with the clothes model and submit it to all the video websites. An easy way to do this is by using http://www.tubemogul.com. You can upload your video once and they will upload it to all the video sites for you.

Then you optimizing the video to increase the traffic to the actual video. Then the video itself will drive traffic back to your website. Optimizing the video is relatively easy, just keep in mind to put your keywords in the title of the video.

Social Bookmarks:

Using social bookmarks is very important. I have worked with websites that have easily doubled their traffic in 30 days just by using http://www.socialmarker.com. This service allows you to take links from your website and submit them to many social bookmark sites. What this does is promotes your blogs or web pages to hundreds of bookmark sites. As people find you on sites like Digg.com, it will drive the traffic back to your website. This also helps in building backlinks, which helps with SEO.

Blog:

Blogging helps in many ways. One thing to remember is content is king on the Internet. The websites with the most fresh content have the most traffic. Youtube, Facebook, etc… have a ridiculous amount of fresh content every single day, so people keep going back.

If you are trying to sell a product online, blogging will help keep that interaction going with the consumer. Lets say you sell something that isn’t a “sexy” item, like sponges. How much can you say about a sponge right? What you can do is something like the CEO of GoDaddy.com does… talk about anything that has to do with business. The idea is to keep people coming back and building your brand in the consumers head. So the one day that person needs a sponge, they will be thinking of you.

At the end of the day marketing is all about being creative, so it is up to you on how make that happen for your business. If you need help, contact me.

If you have a multi-page or multiple visit conversion, then bounce rate is a great indicator of traffic quality. In you are converting on a single page, then bounce rate is not meaningful. That said, while using eCPM and other ROI-based metrics to govern bidding overall, you can use bounce rate in several ways:

If the bounce rate is over 70%, turn it off. If the term is bad enough, you may even want to delete the term and also add it as a negative keyword. For example, I push home based programs and discovered that any keywords with “home” were of ultra low quality. So “work from home” and “make money from home” are horrible. Having “home” as a negative keyword also improves traffic for “business opportunity” on broad match.

If bounce rate is 30%-70%, then you can use that as a quasi-lead. For example, if term A has a bounce rate of 40% has 60% of folks making it past the first page. And term B with a 70% bounce rate has only 30% of folks making it off the page. Thus, term A is delivering twice as many visitors per click as term B and could be bid up twice as much, all else equal. You’re still going to manage to a CPA, but if you don’t have many conversions or a low budget, this is a great early metric on whether that person will become a lead.

If the bounce rate is less than 30%, then something is probably working with the connection between your terms, ads and landing pages. If that term has high volume, place it in it’s own ad group and spin out more related terms. If your keywords are tightly grouped by theme (every term in that ad group means the same thing), then you should see bounce rate to be similar. Ignore bounce rates on low volume keywords, since you’ll see a lot of noise.

When it comes to online search, Google will deliver the majority of your quality organic traffic. For webmasters and online marketers, virtually hard-wiring your site to Google is a must.

As a full-time online brand builder, I have learned a lot over the past 10 years of working on the Internet. This is not exactly rocket science territory here. Google is the biggest entity on the web, especially if you go the free organic traffic route. There are tons of ways to market online which don’t involve Google at all, but for the purposes of this piece, I will be discussing ways any webmaster or marketer can better connect their site and content with Google. Plus, I will also give you some reasons why this is a smart marketing strategy on your part.

The first technique you must perfect is how to get your new content into Google’s Index within minutes, if not seconds. These days with social media sites this can be easily achieved. It may be as fast as your latest Tweet or Google Buzz. Google News is another easy way to instantly get your content into Google. Press releases are another immediate way to connect your content with Google. So too is something as simple as making a video and posting it on YouTube which is Google Owned.

Note: Google has recently revamped the YouTube system and provided many ways webmasters can view the linking data and stats; great source of information for webmasters and marketers.

Actually Google will index any new site or content fairly quickly these days so you don’t have to worry about it. One method I like best is using a free blog from Blogger/Blogspot [which is also Google owned] and placing links there to be indexed within minutes. To keep track of what content Google is indexing, I usually set up Google Alerts for all my main sites and my main keywords. Whenever a page is indexed in Google related to my sites or keywords, Google sends me an email. Many savvy webmasters use these alerts to find and build link partners since these indexed pages will be thematically related to yours. Using Google Alerts will make it seem like you’re totally welded to Google and Google’s indexing system, every second of the day.

Needless to say, keywords rule the web and Google. You must attach your content to keywords people are using to find stuff on the web and build top 10 rankings for those keywords in the search engines, especially Google. Now if you’re new at this, Google gives you some valuable keyword tools you can use to see how many searches are made each month for a keyword phrase and also gives you some idea of the keyword competition you will be facing. I like using google.com/sktool and also labs.google.com/sets. Besides, you must start your Google courtship off on the right foundation.

Next, you must realize Google is not really a search engine but a business. The main goal of this business is to supply quality content to web users so that these users will use Google over and over again, allowing Google to attach ads and make a profit. The key to getting and keeping Google’s attention is fulfilling your part of this “quality equation” with superior content which surfers want and find helpful.

In a recent WebProNews video interview, Matt Cutts said Google has (200) signals it uses to rank content on the web. Most webmasters refer to these as ranking factors, but in truth, they are really signals that your site gives off… provide the wrong signals and it could spell lower rankings. So if you want to keep your site in Google’s good graces, you have to follow some simple SEO on-page rules, such as placing your main keyword in the Title, in the Heading, in the Body and in the URL. Make sure your site is easily navigated by your visitors and especially by the search engine spiders. Keep your linking structure simple, with no links more than three clicks away from your index or homepage. In my opinion, getting quality related one-way backlinks is the most important way to get top rankings in Google.

In recent years, Google has gone out of its way to help webmasters understand all these simple SEO basics. And as far as I am concerned, one resource every webmaster should be using is Google Webmaster Tools. This is a whole suite of tools and information webmasters can use in correlation with Google. Recently, in Webmaster Tools Google has made available Click-Thru data on its search engine results so that you can find out how many impressions you’re getting for a certain keyword and your click-thru or conversion rate. Some webmasters are questioning the accuracy of these numbers, but it will give you some indication of how well your site and content is doing in Google.

Perhaps, another just as valuable program is Google Analytics, where you’re really giving Google access to all your site’s information. You can use Analytics to measure different links/content on your site to see how well it performs. More importantly you can use it to fine-tune your conversion rates in order to make more sales. I also use it to test-out different graphics, different sales copy, different site layouts… and so on. But a word of caution, don’t just use Analytics. As an online marketer you want many sources of information, so regularly study your traffic logs and raw site data. Even with Google and probably especially with Google, you should always cross-reference any data with other sources on your site and on the web.

There are several Google programs which I use to further connect with Google such as Google Docs, Google Knol and iGoogle. One must-have program is Google Accounts, which basically connects me with all my different programs within Google. I have found managing all your Google programs is much easier from this one location. I also like using Google Profiles and Google Buzz to get my content quickly into Google and onto the web. As you have probably guessed already, Google does have a lot of programs which webmasters can use to improve their content’s performance. In the process, by using and intertwining your content with all of the Google programs highlighted here, you’re really connecting with Google en masse.

While many marketing experts will say it is foolhardy to marry all your content to just one search engine, I have found over the years that hard-wiring your site to Google really makes your content readily accessible in the most dominant presence on the web. Doing so not only gives your content the attention it deserves, but it can also help further your goals. Actively positioning your site and content firmly within Google’s many different facets can prove beneficial for any webmaster or online marketer.

Proper ways to perform SEO has become a popular topic of conversation. The difference between having a successful website and a flop usually depends on how you incorporated your SEO.

Learning proper SEO techniques can seem like a daunting task, especially to those who are not familiar with the concept. The biggest problem is SEO changes as the search engines change their algorithms, so it is something that you have to stay on top of.

The following list offers 10 simple SEO techniques you should keep in mind when developing and marketing your website.

1. Make sure your website is initially designed with your SEO needs in mind. Search engines look for text, not flashy graphics and cool layouts. The trendiest web designs will mean nothing if no one is able to find your site.

2. Every page of your website should have a title tag with text describing either your site or what is on the page. Be sure the text includes SEO-type keywords instead of the name of your website. Unless you’re incredibly popular, no one is going to be looking for you by searching for your name. They’ll most likely search for a product or service and the keywords you use will lead them to your site.

3. Consider canonicalization, or whether or not your website address includes or excludes the www prefix. If you choose to use the www version of your website, make sure the non-www version directs users back to the one you use. Make sure you use your preferred version (http://www.mydomain.com or http://mydomain.com) every time you place a link to your site on the web. Don’t use both!

4. When designing your website, be sure to avoid too many drop-down menus, confusing image maps, and excessive images. If you must use any of these methods, be sure to include plenty of text links for the search engine spiders to find and identify. Without links, the search engines will not pick up your site information.

5. It does not matter what type of website extension you use (ie. .html, .htm. .asp, .php). Search engines do not look at the web extension and it will not have any impact at all on search results or ranking.

6. Every page on your website should include a link to your home page and your sitemap. Make sure every link is the same. Home page links should go directly to your domain (http://www.mydomain.com). Make sure your internal links do not include the additional /index.html or .php text as it is not needed (ie. http://www.mydomain.com/index.html).

7. You’ll hear the same phrase over and over again: “Content is king”. It is imperative that your website have fresh, unique, and quality content that is updated on a regular basis. Be sure to include your favorite keyword phrase within the body of the content!

8. People are more likely to input a phrase instead of a single word when conducting internet searches. If your business has a physical location, incorporate the name of your city into the text as well. For example, you might use “our Philadelphia location” instead of “our location”. Including your city name will improve the chances of your site being seen in location searches.

9. If the information on your company website doesn’t change regularly, or remains static, you might want to consider starting a blog. Search engine spiders are always looking for fresh content. Use your blog as an advertising tool and link back to your website within each and every post.

10. Write naturally. The worst thing you can do is try to cram a zillion keywords into your article or blog entry, making it messy and difficult to read. Search engines are able to determine whether or not your text is logical and they will ignore content with ridiculously high keyword density.

11. Building links to your website is essential to its success. As a matter of fact, links are like the queen to complement your king’s fresh content. Choose a keyword phrase and network with other websites, asking them to place links on their pages. Don’t hurt your ranking by having non-related websites place haphazard links. While it may seem great to gather 100s of backlinks, you’re better off limiting your links to related websites. Ten relevant links stand a better chance than 100 irrelevant links.

12. Links within your website should be built with keyword phrases as well. Try to avoid using generic anchor text such as, “click here”. Also, do not use the same anchor text over and over when building any links, you will get penalized by the search engines.

13. Don’t place a list of links on your website. Always place a link within at least two to three lines of related content. The better your description, the more likely it is someone will click on the link.

14. Don’t limit your keyword or phrase to text links. You should also incorporate your keywords into your image alt tag and domain name, whether it is part of the name itself or contained within the description.

15. Try to avoid using frames, Ajax, and Flash as much as possible. None of these functions are keyword or search engine friendly and will hurt your SEO results.

16. Before your website can be found by the search engine spiders, it must be indexed. Search engines such as Google have regular submission forms, but it can take days or weeks for your form to be processed. Having a highly ranked website place a link to your site is a sure-fire way to have your site indexed quickly.

17. No matter what you hear, don’t be overly concerned with the Google PageRank of your website. A website that is properly developed and contains good content can outrank a website with higher PageRank.
